Rug & Carpet Cleaning:

Oriental Carpets, Area Rugs, Furniture and Partitions

The term ˘€śrug˘€ť generally means a textile floor covering that is not fastened down and that does not extend over the entire floor. ˘€śCarpet˘€ť usually refers to a floor covering that is installed and fastened down from wall to wall.

• Oriental rug˘€ť refers to a hand knotted or hand-woven rug made in one of the traditional weaving areas of the Middle or Far East.

• Oriental rug quality is judged by the type of knot used, pile depth, number of knots per square inch, yarn fineness, color richness, fastness of the dye, and subtleness of the pattern.

• Oriental design rugs are machine-made reproductions of hand-knotted Orientals and are often incorrectly called Oriental rugs. Most ˘€śOrientals˘€ť brought to you for cleaning are, in fact, Oriental design rugs, not true Oriental rugs.

• The most common fibers used in weaving Oriental rugs are wool, cotton, silk and rayon. Sometimes, camel hair, goat hair and horse hair are used.

• Braided rugs are constructed of wool fabric, heavy wool rug yarn, or other materials, including olefin. Individual lengths of braid or a continuous braid may be stitched or laced together into the desired shape.

• All braids have a core, which is an inner material that gives the braid shape and consistency. During cleaning, this core, if made of paper or dyed waste material, can easily bleed to the surface! Paper, foam, textile byproduct, or waste materials are often used for the core of low quality rugs.

• Dhurrie rugs are usually cotton or wool, but can be silk and are flat woven stiff un-backed reversible rugs traditionally from India.

• Although cotton Dhurries are washable, strong colors are likely to run during warm water extraction.

• Do not wet clean silk dhurries!!

• Flokati rugs have a very fluffy wool pile with very long fibers and look very much like lambs wool.

• The regular flokati rug has an average pile height of 3˘€ť and the long flokati rug has an average pile height of 5˘€ť and is 3 times the knot density.

• Flokati rugs are easily wet cleaned (after pretesting) if Brown Out® is properly applied after cleaning. The main difficulty in cleaning Flokati is that the rug has no stiffness and tends to be pulled up into the cleaning head, so it usually needs to be held down while cleaning

• Sisal is a natural fiber derived from the agave sisalana cactus plant.

Other natural fibers used in making ˘€śSisal˘€ť rugs are coir (coconut fibers), jute, hemp, seagrass from China, and mountain grass from China.

• Sisal rugs are for indoor use only and are often found in enclosed and screened-in porches. They should never be exposed to rainfall or allow to become water saturated.

• It is important during cleaning to control the amount of moisture. It is NOT recommended that Sisal be cleaned with a wet cleaning method. If the Sisal rug is severely soiled, try cleaning with Natural Fiber Cleaner.

• Kilims (Kelims) are flat hand-woven reversible rugs with no pile, made in Turkey, Kurdistan, the Caucasus, Iran and western Turkestan.

• Kilim rugs are characterized by long, narrow slits in the fabric that are arranged in a stair-step pattern to avoid weakening the rug.

• Kilim rugs usually are reversible. They are made in bold colors and a variety of designs

• Kilims may be constructed of wool, camel hair, goat hair and/or horsehair. Because the dyes in Kilims typically run easily, you should only wet clean a Kilim after testing EVERY color for fastness. If the dyes run, you need to dry clean the rug.

• You usually have to block the rug out to prevent uneven shrinkage and subsequent curling of the corners as the rug is drying.

• Ingrain rugs are made of yarn dyed before weaving, and woven so that the pattern is shown on both sides

• Navajo (Navaho) rugs still can be purchased, but numerous imitations are on the market. A true Navajo rug is made of wool in a tapestry weave. Some twill weaves and basket weaves also are common.

• Authentic Navajo rugs are extremely sensitive even to water. If just water gets on a rug, blot immediately because the dyes will run. Wet clean cautiously˘€”bleeding and shrinkage are a very common problem with Navajo rugs. Do not wet

• Authentic Navajo rugs should be dry cleaned with solvent only. Imitation Navajo rugs are normally easily wet cleaned˘€”just be sure to pretest.

• Ragg (or rag) rugs are sturdy, colorful rugs hand woven from cotton scraps or wool. They can be a solid color or a mix of many colors. Rag rugs consist of irregular stripes in bright cheerful colors.

Cleaning rugs in the customer˘€™s house is not much different from cleaning carpet, except that the flooring material under the rug must be protected and pre-inspection and pretesting are critical. We strongly suggest that you determine the price for cleaning as an amount per square foot ($2.00)

or 10% of the declared value, whichever is greater.

First, before starting to clean any rug, inspect the rug very carefully and note any damage anywhere on the rug and have the customer sign off on such damage. Also make note of the material used to construct the rug as this will be important in cleaning method. Ask the customer if in doubt.

SanoSteam Rug Cleaning Guidelines

1. Pre-vacuum all rugs˘€”both sides. Never clean a rug on top of other carpet˘€”transfer of color to the carpet can occur.

2. As with upholstery, ALWAYS pretest for dye stability. Apply the prespray and detergent to a white towel, rub a dark area that might bleed, wait at least 15 minutes and repeat. If the dye bleeds, try a lower pH detergent. (mist all rugs with Odorless acid or fab-set to set dye)

3. If cotton, test with Natural Fiber Cleaner. If it still bleeds, you may need to ˘€śshampoo˘€ť the rug with Chemspec Oriental Rug Shampoo. If it still bleeds, the rug can only be dry-cleaned. If it is a cotton rug or a rug that readily browns, clean with Natural Fiber Cleaner at 1 ounce per gallon.

4. If the rug is silk, don˘€™t wet clean it! Silk should only be dry cleaned because of the risks of yellowing, dye loss, ringing, and physical damage (silk loses about 20% of its strength when wet).

5. If the rug is rayon, wet clean VERY cautiously! Rayon loses about 50% of its strength when wet and rayon rugs frequently bleed severely. Pre-test for dye stability. Rayon has a poor durability, high absorbency, poor dimensional stability, and a tendency to strongly shrink.

6. Use caution when using proteolytic enzyme spotters or deodorizers on wool˘€”they are designed to attack proteins and wool is a protein.

7. Pretreat or remove any existing spots on the rug that may pose a problem while cleaning. If possible, clean the rug with the 4˘€ť stair tool. Using the smaller cleaning head allows you to clean the rug without a pad, and also expedites the drying process once the rug has been cleaned.

8. Pre-dampen the fringes with your cleaning solution and then to ensure thorough coverage of all fringe fibers, use the brush to comb the fringe neatly away from the rug face. Fringe is usually white cotton and grays severely. If the fringes are still very gray, apply 40 volume clear hydrogen peroxide, comb through, and allow to dry. ------ NOTE: On some tribal rugs, the dark appearance of the fringe is the natural color of the goat hair that is sometimes blended with the wool and is not discoloration or browning. In that case, do not use a bleaching agent.

9. If needed, apply Brown Out at 8 ounces per gallon to the rug ˘€” very lightly just to the surface.

10. Dry time is critical. Therefore, an absolute minimum of moisture should be used and a blower should be used after cleaning. It is very important that the rug be dried in 48 hours or less to prevent mold formation.

11. Apply Teflon® protector as the final step but note that it will increase the drying time. Use a brush or rake to set the rug nap.

12. Allow to dry without moving the rug ˘€” preferably using air movers. Dry time is critical to avoid bleeding and browning.

13. If, in spite of your best efforts, the rug severely browns, do a Brown Out flush or an All Fiber Textile Rinse on the rug, and allow it to dry upside down. This moves the browning to the back of the rug.

Cleaning Tips
With everyday household products, you can begin to clean spots caused by tar, blood, chocolate, coffee, crayon, lipstick, pet stains and many more.

CANDLE WAX
The first thing to do, as in most cases, is to gently scrape the excess material off with a dull object such as a spoon. Next, cover with a damp WHITE terrycloth towel and apply a warm NOT HOT steam iron. The wax will be absorbed into the towel. Be sure that the towel is large enough to cover the area, and NEVER touch the iron directly to the carpet, or it will melt the carpet fiber. Remember to keep the towel damp. Change or rotate the towel and repeat this process until the wax is absorbed. Next, if there continues to be a spot, apply a dry cleaning solvent to a white terrycloth towel and blot the area. Apply some plain water and blot again. Finish by applying a pad of paper towels (8-10) with a heavy weight on top. Let it stand several hours or overnight.

CHOCOLATE/ICE CREAM

First, scrape up any excess with a spoon. It is important to get as much off the carpet as soon as possible. Next blot, NOT scrub, with paper towels. This will assure that you have absorbed all the excess material. Then mix 1 tsp. Of CLEAR dish or laundry detergent with 1 cup WARM water with a spray bottle or damp sponge. Be sure to use sparingly. The biggest mistake even professional carpet cleaners make is to use too many chemicals. This will only contribute to the spot reappearing at a later time. Let the mixture sit on the carpet for at least five minutes and then blot with paper towels. Repeat this step as necessary. Next, apply some plain water and place a thick pad of paper towels with a very heavy weight on top. This will absorb the remainder of any stain or chemical left behind.

INK & SPILLS
Drink spills such as cola, ginger ale, apple juice orange juice etc. can be effectively cleaned with the following steps. The first step in any liquid spill is to blot it into paper towels. Take several towels at a time and press flat down with your hands to transfer the liquid into the paper. Use as many new towels as necessary until the liquid is absorbed. If you have stain protected carpets such as stain master this may be all you need do. If not and there is a stain left behind you can mix one ounce of CLEAR liquid dish or laundry detergent with one cup of water and LIGHTLY spray the affected area. Very lightly rub the solution into the carpet with your fingers and let stand for approximately 10 minutes. Then blot the area again. If the spot persists reapply some solution but instead of blotting put 8 or 10 paper towels over the area and put a very heavy weight on top. Let stand for several hours or even overnight. This last step can be repeated until the stain is gone or there is no more stain blotting into the towels. Patience is the key to any spot removal. If you have a special problem area that I have not discussed feel free to email me at sanosteam@usa.net

PET STAINS
Pet stains! Anyone who has a pet shudders at the mention of these two words. House training pets can cause serious headaches. The key to cleaning any pet accident is time. The sooner you can get to it the better chance you have of preventing a permanent stain. If your accident is more then several weeks old then it has already begun to take up permanent residence.

Pet urine is the most commonly asked about problem. If it is less then 20 minutes old you must first blot the liquid up completely with paper towels. Once all liquid is absorbed you can mix 1 teaspoon of liquid CLEAR dish or laundry detergent with a cup of plain WARM water and spray LIGHTLY. Gently rub in and let stand for approximately 5 or 10 minutes. Blot until dry. If the stain is removed, finish by spraying with plain water and blot with a pad of paper towels and a heavy weight. Let the weight stay for several hours and repeat with new towels if necessary.

If the stain persists, or if you have an older stain apply a mixture of ˝ cup hydrogen peroxide (3% solution ONLY) and 1 teaspoon of household ammonia under a pad of weighted towels. This solution should be disposed of after two hours, as it will lose its effectiveness. This step can be repeated until the stain is removed. Remember, the older the stain the less chance to remove it. Apply water with a damp sponge, and blot dry with paper towels. Last but not least apply a mixture of white vinegar and water.

GREASE, GUM AND TAR
Whether you work on your car, have had a new driveway installed, or your street has been re-paved you have probably tracked some grease or tar on your carpet. The first step in cleaning it is to use a spoon or dull knife to GENTLY scrape any excess from the carpeting.

Next, you will need a dry cleaning solvent or if you would prefer a natural product, you could use a citrus solvent. You can purchase these at any hardware store or supermarket. Pour some solvent onto a white terrycloth towel or rag, folded several times and then block the effected area with pressure. DO NOT scrub the area. You will only spread the problem and make it harder to clean. Just press down as hard as you can for 10 seconds. The grease or tar will absorb into the towel. Pour some more solvent onto a new section of the towel and repeat this step until there is very little of the grease being absorbed. Patience is the key here. You so not want to scrub the area before it is time.

When you have reached the point where it is little or no more spot being absorbed, then and only then, is it ok to scrub gently. NEVER apply the solvent directly to the carpet, and always use in a well-ventilated area. Solvents have an extremely strong odor and should not be inhaled. The last step is to apply some water with a damp sponge and blot with a pad of weighted paper towels and let stand for several hours.

The stronger strains of mold and bacteria attach themselves to surfaces within colonies called biofilms. Biofilms are essentially places where organisms can hide. A biofilm community can include bacteria, fungi, yeasts, protozoa and other microorganisms. When an organism is within the biofilm it is all that more difficult to reach and at that point are extremely difficult to eradicate.

Anabec˘€™s Cleaning Solution successfully eradicates the biofilm. The Biofilm is the lifeline for food and nutrients for mold and bacteria. Anabec disintegrates the biofilm and agglomerates the mold and bacteria, denaturing their protein cellular structure.

The final step is to apply one of our two shields, Anashield or X-70. We use this simple analogy ˘€¦˘€ťLike Washing and Waxing your car˘€ť. Our patented Cleaner removes the biofilm and the nutrients and leaves a hygienic surface. You now apply one of our microbial shields, Anabec˘€™s Anashield or Anabec˘€™s X-70. These shields provide long-term protection against mold and bacteria and certified Anabec applicators have warranties on all Anabec systems.

MOLD ABATEMENT AND REMEDIATION
Correct the source of excessive moisture.

Fix leak

De-moisturize by using dehumidifiers, and brig relevant-humidity level below 40%

Consider using a mask or respirator for protection against inhaling airborne spores. Respirators can be purchased from hardware stores; select one for particle removal (sometimes referred to as a N95 or TC-21C particulate respirator).

Wear protective gloves, eye protection glasses, and clothing should be immediately washed.

Take care to remove or clean contaminated materials in a way that prevents the emission of fungi and dust contaminated with fungi from leaving a work area and entering an occupied area.

Non-porous (e.g., metals, glass, and hard plastics) and semi-porous (e.g., wood, and concrete) materials that are structurally sound and are visibly moldy can be cleaned and reused.

Cleaning should be done using a detergent solution.

Porous materials (e.g., ceiling tiles and insulation, and wallboard) with more than a small area of contamination should be removed and discarded. Porous materials that can be cleaned, can be reused, but should be discarded if possible.

A professional restoration is present when restoring porous materials with more than a small area of fungal contamination.

All materials to be reused should be dry and visibly free from mold.

Periodic inspections should be conducted to confirm the effectiveness of remediation work.

Thank you for being interested in using our services to meet your cleaning needs!

Having your carpeting cleaned every 6 to 12 months by a competent professional will more than double your carpet˘€™s life! Although you may be inclined to think ˘€śit˘€™s only carpet cleaning,˘€ť there are substantial differences in the amount of formal training, education, general competency, and even honesty among carpet cleaning companies. Some use inferior methods that just brush or ˘€śabsorb˘€ť only the surface dirt off your carpet, while other ˘€śprofessional˘€ť cleaning companies use very harsh (but really cheap) chemicals that will clean the fiber all right, but literally rot out the fiber doing it. Many cleaners leave behind sticky residues that quickly re-attract soils and dirt to your carpet, etc...

Here at Sano Steam we are dedicated to providing the truly professional, quality service you hope to receive when you spend your hard-earned dollars. We thoroughly and deeply clean your carpets and upholstery with safe, biodegradable carpet and upholstery cleaning agents that leave no sticky residue and are approved for use on advanced stain-resist fibers. All our technicians are formally trained and tested to ensure proper care of your valuable goods. Even abused carpets and upholstery that may seem to be a lost cause can often be restored to save you expensive replacement costs!

Our goal is to listen to your cleaning needs and meet those needs on your schedule, in a prompt, pleasant, and professional manner, which is why we provide a firm written quote before each job and why every job is guaranteed. You˘€™ll be delighted with our service, or you don˘€™t pay a penny!

If you have questions feel free to call me and I will be glad to help!

• ˘€śOriental rug˘€ť refers to a hand knotted or hand-woven rug made in one of the traditional weaving areas of the Middle or Far East.

We are getting well known as the place to call for quality, indoor, environmentally friendly cleaning. We are always working to make customers˘€™ homes as clean and healthy as possible. In this area, the dirt particles are very small and accumulate in the ductwork of our houses.

An average home gets about 40 pounds of dirt added to the interior per year. The ducts are hidden areas that let large amounts of dust and debris grow without your knowledge. Forgetting to change the air filters only increases the speed. We would like to get on your regular maintenance list for those change of tenant times.

So, here is an offer of $ 15.00 off the first cleaning of any of the ductwork systems of your properties. Let me know when you want to schedule our first demonstration. Have a happy holiday season, and be safe.

We are expert in ridding houses of unwanted stains and dirt. You, as a busy professional in today˘€™s world, need help. We are able to bring a van powered steam and vac system to your home and get it back to beautiful condition. Sano Steam has been in business in Wilmington for 16 years, and is known for its expertise in carpet and rug cleaning. Dry cleaning methods are not able to get as much dirt out as a steam and vacuum system can.

About 6 years ago, Omar began cleaning duct systems for dirt, dust, molds, mildew, and other indoor environmental problems. Smells in a house can be originating in lots of different places. We scrub the ducts, steam clean the vent and return covers, and use germicide to kill all of the nasties. Airborne particulate matter is a problem for many in today˘€™s world; asthma, bronchitis, and allergy victims will tell you if you ask. Duct cleaning can get rid of breeding areas in your ventilation.

I am contacting you because people who do smart things in business get busy from that work, and I can help you in 2 ways. I can be a solution to the problem of dirty or smelly carpets and rooms in your properties. I also can help you personally in keeping your home clean and smelling nice for a long time. Call me if you would like a quote on doing services for you or your company.

Mold Solutions By Sano Steam
